This Connoisseur-Caliber Kurdish Camelhair rug charms with a novel rendering of one of the most beloved motifs among tribal rug aficionados, the boteh, which here symbolizes a field abundant with life-sustaining crops. The graphically drawn botehs point in different directions, row by row, within the sturdy latticework, imparting a sense of movement to the composition. It is enthralling to see a most imaginative interpretation of the meandering vine and flower in the main border, where the vine and palmette are almost completely abstract. The Greek key in Escher-style contrast of the minor borders forms Fences of Security for the precious interior. Kurdish weavers in the 19th century used camel hair because of its local abundance and the cultural reverence for camels among nomadic and tribal communities in Northwest Persian Azerbaijan. Raising camels was essential for transport and daily needs, making camel hair readily available to the Kurdish artisans. This natural camel hair has long been prized by connoisseurs for its durability and its hue, which blends easily into Western decor.
