(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The lion, an ancient symbol of Persian identity and culture commonly used in royal court decorations, remains closely associated with kingship. As a protective talisman against evil, the lion also represents power and strength. Here, a pair of stately "kings of the jungle" luxuriate in the lower portion of a picturesque "Garden of Paradise" design, also an important symbol connecting heaven and earth. The drawing of the lions, birds, and flora show extraordinary skill, finesse, and consummate artistry, confirming this piece was plausibly commissioned for a special occasion or to commemorate a significant event or person of high standing in society. Languid "Trees of Life" ascend skyward on an alabaster ground replete with realistic birds and a pair of nests filled with chirping hatchlings. The upper spandrels depict tenderly rendered families of deer, which embody the concept of security and well-being. This piece is signed in a bold cartouche at the apex of the arch by the Khasati brothers' workshop, which is renowned for its quality of materials and profoundly innovative, superlatively crafted work.
