("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") This glorious, over two-centuries-old carpet is certainly among the oldest Laver Kirman we have offered, yet remarkably is still in comfortably floor worthy condition. Both supremely decorative and highly collectible, its mind-bogglingly detailed all-over pattern and restrained palette combine to evoke the serene understatement that was greatly valued by the Persian aristocracy at that time. As part of a symbolic, non-representational artistic tradition, its field of repeating boteh (precursor to the Indian paisley) offers a mesmerizing melodic quality. Deftly executed, gentle variations of tone, spacing, and shape invest this motif with constant renewal and invite ever-closer viewing. Five densely ornamented borders are a literal carpet of flowers, in which three separate patterns magically support each other. A strong patina of great age adds to the enrapturing quality of this monumental, best-of-the-best early Persian carpet.
