(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Silk production has an exceedingly long history, likely originated in China some 6,000 to 8,000 years ago and famously spread via the Silk Roads from 100 BCE onward. In the late 4th century BC, it reached the court of Darius III, Great King of Persia. Fast-forward to the 16th-century Safavid Dynasty when Persian silk rugs reached their zenith and became sumptuous symbols of status and taste. In this incomparable rug from the ancient city of Kirman, two bejeweled columns stand at the entrance to a breathtaking, phantasmagorical garden where, in the center, stands a super magnificent 'Tree of Life’ that beckons the transfixed viewer to enter. Above, a fanciful archway barely contains the crowning blossom. This effervescent art rug is an astounding riot of exceedingly rich color that bursts through the shimmering silk surface to a spellbinding effect. Its overscale botanical features contrast with most of Persian city rug design, which emphasizes the minute nature of floral patterns. Here, the weaver has created both in color palette and design a celebration of fecundity and a palpable heat from the prominent rare tones of tangerine, copper, and russet. The non-traditional striped border of tulips is further evidence of this visionary weaver’s advanced skill.
