Utterly engaging, this is a fascinating window on the eclectic Malayer weaving heritage, revealing the heights of artistic and emotional expression occasionally reached by only its most accomplished weavers. While the repeating boteh seed allover pattern is employed with relative frequency across genres, we have not seen such glowing examples of this iconic pear-like motif within a self-contained flowering vine matrix, or rendered on a rarely found ivory ground and with such lighthearted ingenuity. Framing the elongated field and border suite of saffron gold and royal blue, an unexpected open margin of luxurious, undyed mocha-toned camelhair brings further distinction and complements the spirited artistry of this 19th-century runner in superb condition.
