("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The rarest of Kashan weavings is the highly revered and difficult-to-find antique Mohtasham Kashan subgroup. Only woven up to the end of the 19th century, this elite class of carpets use only the highest quality lambswool accompanied by extraordinarily fine knotting. This exemplary piece begins in the center with a cornflower blue cruciform medallion enclosed by four weeping willow trees and uber-fine latticeworks composed of minuscule blossoms. This centerpiece rests within a rare undyed camelhair reserve masterfully adorned with a finely rendered allover floral pattern consisting of flowing vinery, broad detailed flowerheads, and delicate floral sprays. The designers of this weaving were successful in creating this allover floral design which appears to continue well beyond the boundary of the camelhair reserve. The deep indigo surround, also filled with finely drawn flora, presents additional weeping willow trees in each corner. The lapis primary border displays masterful use of abrash which provides significant visual depth beneath the series of robust blooms interspersed with distinctive arching leaves and delicate “cloudbands”, a motif believed to be an ancient Chinese symbol of good fortune.
