(Museum-Quality) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) The 'Tree of Life' in Persian carpets symbolizes profound concepts of immortality, fertility, growth, and is an axis mundi between heaven and earth. It is an ancient motif that has the power to transform the decorative into a significant artifact that tells the story of existence, transcendence, and divine connection. The consummate artistry of this museum piece is a tremendous delight to behold, with its wild garden theme filled with flora and fauna. In the center stands a flame-fringed, sea-green cypress flanked by two bifurcated versions, engaged with the border as supports for the archway overhead. The smaller trees fill out the enchanting scene where a bemused, easy-going monkey casually picks fruit, while two farmers collect fallen pieces below. Further up, doves take a bow among pomegranates, while prancing squirrels hold their acorns like lanterns under the watchful gaze of four crested pheasants. Ancient, most delicate color ways are captured here with the touch of a painterly maestro, illuminating this imaginative scene. The bold introduction of searing scarlet that mellows into soft vermilion is a distinctive characteristic of Mohtasham palettes, and in this piece is extraordinarily intrepid and enlivening.
