Camelhair was used extensively in antique Northwest Persian village rugs due to its abundant availability from local nomadic tribes, its superior durability, and its ability to produce a strikingly different color palette from the prevailing carpet palettes of the day. Assyrian and other tribal weavers experienced tremendous aesthetic freedom to express motifs in ways that harmonized through asymmetry and natural irregularities. This is evident in this enchanting 125-year-old piece in heavy-pile condition. The eye-catching stepped camelhair reserve features a honeycomb latticework that appears spontaneous, with spacing that constantly changes, yielding an organic, rhythmic movement. Camelhair grounds are often left nearly bare, but this imaginative weaver, in a delightful textural twist, embellished the design with horizontal, ladder-like ivory stripes, adding an effervescence to the entire composition. Above and below the luminous reserve, vibrant vermillion realms are filled with an array of floating motifs originally derived from court designs, and imaginatively rendered in a simplified, highly stylized manner. The main border of shifting shades of alluring lapis forms a contrasting frame that is filled with squared Ram’s-horn motifs, symbolic of strength, inspiration, and the energy to act.
