(High-Decorative)
Folkloric whimsy and joyful exuberance unite to make this innovative nomad rug come to life. "Northwest" refers to a diverse group of antique Persian rugs in myriad weaving villages and encampments that, during the 19th century, occupied an expansive wilderness area west of Tehran, north of Bijar, and south of Tabriz. This unusually narrow and visually endearing runner features four octagonal medallions utilizing an ancient emblematic design known as the "Wheel of Life." Each is embellished upon a rich golden bronze-toned camelhair ground that is otherwise unadorned except for two enigmatic characters stamped midway along the field. Not only do the color combinations shift in the medallions, but they bear unique central ornaments that are original artistic embellishments. Improvised borders, including a playful oak leaf and rosette main band, are additional charming features of this unaffected work of folk art.
