(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") This is an especially unique Qashqai weaving presented in an unusual allover pattern “Vase” format that is quite unlike most of the rugs seen from this Persian tribal group’s design lexicon. Two resolute azure vases, connected by a magically slender tree trunk, adorn the top and bottom of the ivory field. Four feathery cypresses occupy the corner spandrel zones. Amidst the profusion of woodblock print-like poppies and fiery flowering bushes are ethereal echoes of the vases in ecru and a wonderful variety of birds and animals hiding in plain sight. Here and there, favorite semiotic devices such as S-shaped Zoroastrian “cloudbands,” latch-hooked “Wheels of Life,” and mysterious checkerboards dot the surreal landscape. A crown-shaped floral and vine meander occupies the narrow primary border based on a luxe midnight blue. This avant-garde 19th-century rug came from an unfettered creative weaver and looks as though it could have launched a post-modern art movement. Its superb condition, with very fine knotting and mostly heavier pile throughout, makes it a tempting acquisition for rug connoisseurs who thought they had seen it all.
