(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Sauj Bulag rugs, woven by Kurdish weavers, are a distinctive antique type with a rich history, dating back at least to the 18th century. They are known for their vibrant color palettes and the blending of traditional tribal motifs with elements characteristic of sophisticated urban workshops. The weavings from this part of Kurdistan were highly regarded by the local gentry and today among collectors and connoisseurs for their beauty, craftsmanship, and historical significance. Harmonious flower heads and split tulip motifs glow in a joyful array of robust naturally wrought coral, sapphire blue, turquoise, and burnt carnelian, all resting upon a golden ground that would have captivated the ancient Argonauts! Secondary borders feature orderly and spontaneously free-flowing reciprocal “Wave” designs, adding tremendously to the rugs' already exceedingly tribal ambiance. With almost negligible wear, this precious saffron Khan's rug must have been in the hands of collectors throughout its life, as it is among the rarified group of mid-19th-century tribal rugs to retain virtually full pile.
