(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) For millennia, the Persian lion has symbolically represented kingship, divine power, and mastery over nature. This mind-blowing 175-year-old Senneh Camelhair rug features an emblematic presentation of the Qajar Dynasty’s recognizable coat of arms of a friendly-faced sun — here a transmogrified flower — rising over a sword-bearing lion. While this rendition is happily far less martial, it pays homage to the rulers of the day, possibly commissioned for a high-ranking official, on a minuscule reticulated backdrop. This leonine medallion projects detached vertical pendants insistent upon carving their own space within the gently patinaed field. A rarely seen in Senneh rugs, an unadorned camelhair reserve is replete with exceedingly fine abrash textures, surrounded by azure and ivory zones of finely etched, beautifully abstract botanicals. Radial boteh ’Seed of Life’ structures such as those found in the octagonal pendants whirl among a plethora of micro-scale motifs. The burnt carnelian main border is adorned with flowerheads, leaves, and blossoms ensconced in a prolific vinery.
