(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) This rare, early Senneh rug is a beautiful example of this relatively lesser-known Azerbaijan style. Senneh rugs woven during the time period of this piece are woven in extremely sharp relief, through an extraordinary patience and commitment to refinement. A colossal medallion with commensurately sized carnelian-hued pendants appears to have been cast into the middle of the field to create a reverberating ripple effect. Pleasingly esoteric botanical motifs populate the triangular areas of the parchment margins, unlike any we have seen before in this style. Botanically inspired medium and large-scale ornamentation showcases the whimsical Senneh treatment, combining virtuoso precision with undiluted naiveté. This piece is imbued with an earthy, quiet warmth augmented by the subtle striations of Prussian blue tones in the stepped centerpiece and corners. The famous border design, named for 16th-century Shah Abbas of the Safavid dynasty, is rendered with a decidedly Senneh twist.
