("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The town of Senneh is located in the western area of Kurdistan, close to the well-known city of Bijar. These carpets, including both pile rugs and flatweaves, display a very distinctive fine weaving style that allows for elegant patterns and a high degree of design details. This piece is truly unique in that it employs the much beloved “Garden of Paradise” design, yet with many original and memorable embellishments. At first glance, the field reveals a plethora of colorful leaves, flowers, and vinery in tones of carnelian red, coral, mint green, and maize all resting upon a patinated alabaster ground. On closer inspection, however, one can view three rarely seen horizontal fences and vine-formed archways that create four garden spaces. Two of these areas are adorned with a total of five whimsical human figures that may be gardeners, weavers, or local townspeople. Joining the figures are a bounty of minuscule birds in carnelian red and the larger rose bouquets, known as “Guli Farang” or foreign flower, are one of the few European-influenced designs reinterpreted by Persian weavers.
