Twitter Facebook Pinterest(High-Collectible +) ("The California Collection") Known for their “handkerchief” handle, a feature that brought this town royal sponsorship during the Qajar period, Senneh’s weavings were one of the three types shown in Persia’s first European exhibition. Their weave was so fine that Senneh rugs were often used over tables and furniture equally with placement on floors. This best-of-its-genre, 175-year-old piece shows pairs of lovebirds sharing a brief romantic interlude, perched on cabbage rose-filled vases trimmed with sweeping sapphire garlands set against a velvety ivory ground. Additional bouquets extend horizontally, connected by meandering ivy. Beyond the unfathomably consummate construction and visionary pinpoint allover patterning, the glowing quality of its virtuoso colors, carefully brewed and chosen especially, might steal the show. Also, this tapestry piece was meant to be appreciated tactilely and through its visual artistry. Even the foundation had to be made of something precious, such as the hand-wrought silken threads. Against the odds, its condition is superb with heavier pile.
