(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Sophisticated rug weaving from the powerful town of Senneh (also known as Sanandaj) in the Kurdistan province attracted the attention of the Persian Safavid ruler and eventually became sponsored by the dynasty 400 years ago. Before that, tribal leaders often commissioned these incomparably exquisite carpets as gifts to equally powerful neighbors. Most late 19th century or younger Senneh feature tight, small-scale repeating patterns, whereas this exceedingly unique early gem presents singular spaciousness that is both highly original and immensely captivating. An intertwining network of naturally curling and meandering vinery threads around two lotus flower nuclei on a clear ivory ground, studded with colorful florets. The borders are constructed like a picture frame. Its orderly perfection is in happy contrast to the field’s more spontaneous drawing and is sumptuously ornate, with interconnected altar-esque structures bearing stately palmettes and fiery dahlia overhead.
