(High-Collectible-Plus) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) Unquestionably one-of-a-kind in design, this alabaster-based, 175-year-old Senneh presents a well-spaced interplay of joyfully etched elements, united by ever-changing pairs of miniature birds. In modern terms, the drawing has the sweetness akin to some animation. With a charming delicacy that is derived from its superfine knotting and all-silk foundation, this weaver built a completely imaginative lattice with numerous original garnitures such as four scalloped ram’s horns, winged creatures part butterfly/part bird, and the central star blossom of twelve rays. From the Kurdish weaving tradition, this piece exemplifies soaring Senneh dexterity. How could such ingenuity and casualness be captured when the rug would have taken many months to complete? This curious conundrum is one of the allures of the finest early Senneh rugs and why they have been admired and feverishly collected for over 200 years. At the height of Kurdistan’s weaving reputation, its palace-sized carpets were one of three styles Persia brought to the Vienna Exhibition of 1873 to dazzle European newcomers to Oriental rugs.
