SERAPI, Northwest Persian

218 x 284cm
3rd Quarter, 19th Century
(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") From one of the villages dotting the landscape of northwest Persian Azerbaijan arose this superb 19th-century Serapi rug of incredibly unique styling and in exceedingly rarely found small room-size dimensions. A noteworthy Far East-inspired medallion is encased in coral-hued vinery, representing celestial cloudbands. Portions of this beautiful medallion are found in the four corners of the field. At its center is a single lotus blossom, as viewed from above, representing purity and rebirth. An irrepressible, vivacious spirit is conveyed by the energetic flowering vinery that envelopes the parchment-toned ground in a riotous display symbolic of bounteous cyclical life found within nature. Saturated jewel hues of masterfully brewed, naturally found dyestuffs infuse a palette of uncommon richness and subtle variety. The border appears to be a total one-off as this particular configuration of oak leaves, carnations, palmettes, ultra-stylized pomegranates, and feathery flowerheads connected by golden filigree vinery is not something we have encountered previously. Extraordinary versatility due to its size and outstanding condition assures that this rug will not remain in our inventory for very long!
