(High-Collectible)
This over 150-year-old Sultanabad in wonderful condition offers an original, naturally elegant, masterfully conceived design that stands alone as the paragon of this style’s artistic height. The little-used technique of layering upon the field closely colored motifs to the background’s tonality, without outlining them in a more contrasting color, is exceedingly difficult to do successfully. The result as exemplified in this rug creates a magical delicate ambiance. Overscale feathered-palmette end-medallions are oriented toward a ginger-toned flowerhead floating on a cerulean layer that itself rests upon the fluted, cornsilk-hued halo, which completes this extraordinary centerpiece. This subtle layering technique continues through the evocative field presentation. Tertiary designs of flowers and their trailing stems add a sense of quiet, meandering movement as if floating on a slowly moving river.
