Twitter Facebook Pinterest(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The northwest Persian city of Tabriz was at times a royally sponsored merchant hub that attracted people and goods along the Silk Routes, which also led to a pre-industrial silk industry there. Their “silky” wool was nearly as refined as their exported silk, developed over time to supply for the demand of soft, finely woven carpets there. This delightful piece combines sophistication and naiveté in a compelling marriage that borrows from Ferahan just to the southeast of Tabriz. A mesmerizing rendition of the centuries-old Herati pattern of rosette-centered diamonds enclosed by palmettes and curling bifurcated leaves that have also been likened to swimming fish and is thus colloquially known as a “koi" pattern. The rhythmically repeating field design veils a dexterously nuanced technique of expansion and compression that adds drama and movement to the composition. In the sandstone main border, Grecian urns billow forth with flowering shrubs to represent the next wave of agricultural bounty, perpetuating the cycle of nature and human existence.
