("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") Tabriz carpets have achieved renown over the centuries for their fineness of weave and classical designs, and their silk carpets assisted in establishing this reputation. This piece excels in its refinement and inspired diaphanous field pattern. The finely etched quality of the flowing vinery is exemplified in the inner sanctum of the centerpiece. At the same time, the edge of this medallion is comprised of delicate serrated leaves in ochre and saffron. This rug's shimmering field is blanketed with uniquely rendered bird forms, some eye-catching while others remain virtually hidden within the tone-on-tone patterning. The most striking of the birds is the tetrad of legendary 'Simurgh' of Persian literature and folklore, often equated with the phoenix, flanking the central medallion with golden ochre bodies. The aged ivory field is imbued with a dancing array of minuscule flowerheads and vinery. Its border is much less defined than usually seen, with an immense golden saffron vine connecting broad flowerheads upon a base of cobalt blue.
