(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") A tremendously endearing, diversely patterned Tehran “Garden of Paradise” design invites us to walk through a thoroughly enchanting, natural world with its weavers. Its field is enlivened by a menagerie of imaginative creatures rendered with painstaking detail overseen by two triumphant phoenixes in the upper corners. The lower field design begins with a leopard, a stork, and a family of deer inhabiting a garden beneath arching trees, continuing upward along the golden khaki ground, a climbing snake winds toward a bird’s nest while its tail is being held by a large fowl. Numerous colorful birds, finely etched flora and striking trees rest beneath the detailed phoenixes and a unique pair of angular trellises along the upper regions of the field. This exceptionally finely knotted piece deviates from the formality traditionally found in Persian City carpets, offering instead a whimsical playfulness enhanced by its tremendously varied, softened color palette and masterful use of abrash. The engaging tableau continues into the exquisite borders where fawns, leopards, rabbits, and dogs dwell among a range of blossoms, all resting upon a soothing sapphire blue base.
