(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The Persian floral "Tree of Life" design was almost always portrayed under an archway that framed prodigious flora and, often, highly detailed, recognizable, or imaginary fauna. Classical "Garden of Paradise" carpets are similar but usually feature vases or arbors rather than one prominent tree. As a genre, they are meant to illustrate a divine setting populated by earthly flowers and animals, thereby capturing the weaver's admiration of creation, a celestial presence on the earth. For urban weavers and designers, these carpets are a special project, as their deepest emotions can express themselves through the lens of their faith. Displayed in all their magnificence in this mid-century Tehran, a prodigious blossoming tree reaching upward and a variety of splendidly presented flowers evoke awe and wonder at the intensity of the natural world. In a unique choice, life-size roosters are prominent at the foot of the tree; after centuries of obscurity in floral weaving, here are being given a principal role, their exquisite chromatic feather patterns, too long overlooked, are expertly rendered. Pairs of parrots and large pheasants occupy tree limbs, and nightingales alight in the upper deep indigo corner pieces.
