(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") Antique Persian Sultanabad carpets from the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century have become some of the most desirable among Persian town weavings, appealing enormously to connoisseurs and newcomers alike. An alternative style of Sultanabads was developed by Ziegler & Co. of Manchester, England, which subsidized one-of-a-kind commissioned pieces, particularly for export to England and France. In this fantastic Ziegler Sultanabad, a majestically sculpted cobalt blue medallion with closely held anchor pendants commands the field. Within this spacious parchment ground, lively lions prowl, and pairs of birds soar (appearing to do somersaults depending on the viewer’s vantage point) while delicate branches emerge from the pendants. Four corner spandrels are nearly quartered reflections of the centerpiece and appear to tantalizingly continue past the border frame. The carpet’s appearance is heightened by the subtle use of abrash or intentional color striation, which gives a sense of texture and dimensionality to every zone. This carpet’s condition remains superb into the 21st century.
