(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Very few over a century-old rugs are attributed to the pre-Zoroastrian city of Semnan located in the high desert some 130 miles east of Tehran, and the vast majority offer grand, multi-lobed center medallions. Yet, possessing the fine knotting and denser pile of the weavers of this locale is this utterly fascinating anomaly, an entirely original, botanical carpet lightly divided into 12 compartments, each portraying an elaborate vase containing roses and other exotic flowers, all with six birds perched alongside and hovering above. This offshoot of the famed "Bird and Vase” motif is also to be found against the rug’s midnight blue-based main border with its bevy of fowl presented in continually changing postures. The rug’s color palette is an enticing as its subject matter, particularly its rich Aegean blue field, potent maroon of the vases, diamonds of the lattice that enclose the field and its secondary borders.
