HALVAI BIJAR, Northwest Persian
3' 8" x 5' 3"
Late 19th Century
(High-Decorative) (“NEW ARRIVAL") This Halvai Bijar is an exceptionally finely knotted, exquisitely drawn Persian town rug that delights the eye with an especially ordered arrangement of the cherished traditional Herati design in all three compositional realms: field, reserve and cornerpieces. It is interesting that there is no continuity between these zones; instead, the weaver has taken opportunity to render the design uniquely each time, imparting a spontaneity not expected in the typically more predictable and formal, regimented aesthetic of town rugs. The aquamarine inner medallion imparts a very welcome sense of depth and vigorous movement at the carpet’s heart, softening the rigid Herati format even further and making this deeply personal rug much more appealing.
