Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The high mountains surrounding the fabled village of Karaja in Northwest Persian Azerbaijan provided the inspiration for this vigorous, distinctive weaving style that drew from both Caucasian and Northwest Persian sources. In an enrapturing departure from the pattern featured in the lion's share of antique Karaja rugs, this nearly 150-year-old roomsize carpet features six navy blue-based hexagonal medallions framed by four sand-hued hexagonal cartouches. In juxtaposition to its navy blue and sand-hued medallions, significant dimensionality is created by its continually color-shaded warm rust field. An unusually fine weave for a Karaja carpet and deeply lanolin-rich wool give this wonderfully preserved 140-year-old carpet an aura of regality.
