(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The antique Persian carpet style known as Mohtasham Kashan honors the memory of the 19th-century master weaver Hadji Hassan Mohtasham who was, in turn, a descendant — and namesake — of a revered 16th-century Persian poet. These exemplary urban workshop weavings share several distinctions, including extraordinarily tightly spun foundations, needle-wrapped edges, and a mind-boggling display of uber-precise detail. Layer upon layer of flowering trees populate the ascending field design, sheltering multifarious fowl of many shapes and sizes. Plants reminiscent of blossoming Bonsai emerge from shallow planters, floating near the vertical edge. Visually anchoring this verdant botanical feast are purposely placed celadon fan palmettes in the center and pairs of cypress forms wreathed in flora. The absolutely virtuoso and expressive color palette speaks for itself, and its treatment of continual, subtle abrash, covering a range of sunset and carnelian reds, leaves one mesmerized if looked upon closely. Luminous delft blues and hues of electrum glisten from the heavy piled surface. The over-scale pattern within the deep indigo main border of aqueous flower heads connected by sweeping ivory garlands aptly encapsulates the field's harmonious intensity.
