Eighteenth Century
(Museum-Quality) (One of 70 "Best-of-Their-Type Rugs" Sold in 2025) This very old, well-preserved magnum opus is an unprecedented discovery, rendering an almost three-dimensional scene of a mosque. Since the 7th century post-Sassanid, architectural drawings of mosques and minarets, prayer niches, gardens, vases, and columns were seen in Persian weavings, possibly offering a symbolic paradise or serving as directional guides or reminders. But carpets woven in diverse villages of northwestern Persia are not known for their prodigious use of these themes, which makes this tremendously rare and extraordinary tapestry all the more beguiling and awe-inspiring. Hanging in the prayer niche of the fortified mosque, a beautiful prayer niche beckons the faithful. Below, a gentle fountain serves as a sanctuary feeding a pool with unexpected carp. Four minarets support a spired roof and eight wind-swept banners that are also found on adjacent buildings. The entire composition is presented in a cubist perspective. The painstaking detail of depicting bricks and stones, and the exquisitely fine abrash texturing achieved through the weaving process, is a virtuoso feat. A powerful midnight indigo primary border is adorned with flower heads influenced by the 'Ram’s Horn’ motif, alternating with floral branches possibly influenced by this region's penchant for the dragon mythology by the suggestion of its scales.
