One of the world’s best sources of antique carpets. – Financial Times
9' 4" x 13' 3" 3rd Quarter, 19th Century Price: $22,000
This terrifically balanced Serapi offers a seldom-encountered level of artistic maturity. Natural colors softened over some 170 years and a dynamic, balanced composition combine to achieve an astonishingly vital aesthetic. Within its atypically sparsely ornamented field, a confident, graphic medallion in antique ivory is filled with a crisply drawn grouping of abstracted fronds and blossom motifs. These motifs extend into four expressive, individually rendered pendants of slightly varied scale and design. A striking assortment of stylized floral forms fills the remainder of the reserve with carefully balanced activity. Atypically, branches and blossoms are defined with color rather than line. This great artistry sensitivity continues in the well-spaced corner pieces and main border. The carpet has been lovingly restored for use in a medium-traffic space.
