("New Arrivals Gallery") Innovative weavings from the Ferahan plains, a stylistic newcomer and darlings of the 1873 Vienna Exhibition, were destined to captivate a world market. In this radiant piece, the medallion reads like a nebula brought to life by an interstellar telescope, inviting close contemplations. A painterly balance is struck via the parchment-toned reserve, which is both understated and dynamic in how it enhances and supports the sharp outlines of the crystalline foliage. A particularly handsome color palette of master-grade natural dyes is contrasted with one another through a deft painterly hand. The main border pattern begins at the bottom ever so spaciously, then gradually undergoes a slight compression as the blossom-laden vinery wends its way upward. Heavier pile and complete ends attest to this rug’s superb condition revealing a glimpse of how this rug would have looked over as century ago. Its inner luminosity shines through exceptional quality karakul sheep’s wool like a fabulous stained glass window.
