("New Arrivals Gallery") This early 20th-century standout from the Azerbaijan village of Karaja offers a thought-provoking totemic visage to the onlooker. Cruciform star medallions and the central sunburst ornament between them are clearly and aesthetically rendered, investing a near-perfect harmony and balance to this piece. Four variations of an ancient motif known as an ‘ashik’ gul hover near the central shield medallion. Take a closer look and see if you can discover the birds within. Featuring an organic, mellow color palette overall, its carnelian ground is exquisitely complimented by deep royal blue medallions and punctuations of forest green throughout. Its rich golden-maize main border houses an enchantingly angular rendition of the Shah Abbas pattern augmented by an unusual, delicate shade of peach. Cleverly improvised asymmetrical compression of the top and bottom borders is a fitting counterpoint to the field’s casually symmetrical design. Offering superb heavier pile condition, the kinetic energy of this expressive rug is assured for many years to come.
