SEICHUR KUBA
4' 0" x 5' 7" (122 x 170cm) Circa 1850
(High-Collectible-Plus) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This iconic rug bears the distinctive kaleidoscopic cruciform medallions that are the hallmark of this much-loved Seichur Kuba style. Its totemic motifs are drawn with profound sophistication and chiseled clarity while maintaining a subtle level of tribal spontaneity. In the ivory field, a bounty of triumphant botanical forms that sprout, connect, dangle, and chase each other, rendered in evocative abstract graphics. A sumptuous palette of incandescent hues stimulates and delights the eye, illuminating every esoteric shape in a vivid revelry of color. The inner and outer borders are adorned with an elaborate interlocking design, popularly known as the "Ocean Wave" or "Eagle's Head," flanking a sequence of red poppy flowerheads and pairs of diminutive almond blossoms on an electrum-hued ground. As a superb work of art, it would be at home in an already robust tribal collection or as a compelling introduction to the world of the Caucasian weaver. Its superb pile condition equally allows for display on the floor or as a unique conversation piece on the wall.
