PERPEDIL
3' 6" x 5' 3" (107 x 160cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This totemic 19th-century Perpedil rug offers successfully presents this weaving group’s treasured traditional patterning in a powerfully spacious and elemental rendering. From the eastern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, where the best pieces were very finely woven, this small, evocative carpet presents age-old symbols with incredible clarity and power. Beyond the emblematic ram’s-horn motifs, geometric blossoms, mythological griffin-like forms, and “snowflake” rosettes, the ginger background is warm and very seldom seen. The visual rhythm of this piece is enchanting! The border suite features Kufic designs drawn with admirable precision, paralleled by dazzling diagonal bar patterns in the minor bands. Still in fabulous condition after 150 years, this iconic rug has a medium pile with a gentle patina that creates a softly shimmering surface.
