("The California Collection") With its riveting graphics and naturally dyed seasoned color, this adorable antique Kazak rug reflects the legendary, bold artistry produced in the Caucasus mountains in unusually small dimensions. This rug's well-balanced format is executed with great spaciousness and creativity. A casually balanced allover pattern features dancing rows of contrast-outlined boteh (“Seed of Life”) forms containing a minuscule potential flower eager to emerge into the sunlight. These endearing botanical motifs are each slightly varied in line and hue, enhancing the organic effect of the gradually changing designs that offer great visual movement. Luminous tones of soft sapphire provide the ideal contrast to the energetic seed pods. Spaciousness and creativity are infused in this tribal art rug, which is rife with visually striking geometric contours. Enigmatic diamonds are spontaneously scattered, adding a whimsical element along all four edges of the field. A crisply rendered “crab” border of sunburst blossoms and spiky appendages fills the ivory main border. Its structure and pile condition remain superb at one and a quarter centuries of age.
