MAHAL
10' 9" x 14' 3" (328 x 434cm) Circa 1910
(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The carpets of Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level. This style appeals strongly to both Persian rug lovers and professional designers alike. Its evocative floral imagery, crisp clarity, and warm, saturated palette create tremendous visual interest. Within the well-proportioned reserve, a bustling allover pattern is composed from floral rosettes surrounded by an intricate assortment of stylized quatrefoils, fronds, palmettes, and blossoms. Another part of the allure of this over-century-old piece is in the vast range of scale explored in flowers of so many sizes. The delightful and inviting time-mellowed color palette of rich tones includes warm reds, forest greens, khaki, shades of blue, and brilliant saffron yellows. Its condition is remarkable with mostly heavier pile.
