MOHTASHAM KASHAN
4' 8" x 7' 0" (142 x 213cm) Circa 1850
(High-Collectible-Plus) ("The California Collection") Achieving an extraordinary level of balance, this handsome Mohtasham Kashan reflects a masterful aesthetic sensitivity in its harmonious melding of pattern, color, and scale. The pulsating medallion is of a modified teardrop type, filled with a kaleidoscopic array of botanical shapes and sprouting wildflowers. As is expected from this incomparable style, this rug's mastery of symmetrical composition springs from a rigorous observation of complex botanical forms. The result is a singular combination of interconnected imagery in the ivory ground reserve that is not unlike the relationships found in nature. A palette of incredibly diverse, intensely harmonious colors, including Mohtasham's signature vermilion (a recipe now lost), supports its majestic, fluid contours. Its primary border is an exceptionally rare motif of interlocking reciprocal crenellations housing shield-like palmettes. With an astonishingly fine weave and still vibrantly glowing from colors slow-dyed 175 years ago, this majestic piece occupies a spectacular position within the canon of Kashan artistry.
