(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") This ingenious Lesghi, with its wonderfully saturated array of resonant hues and esoteric symbolism, epitomizes the totemic mystique surrounding antique Caucasian tribal weavings. Emblematic triple star medallions, symbolizing sacred wisdom of celestial origins, dominate the field, drawn with etched clarity. It is one of the most compelling designs in the Caucasian lexicon, inspiring weavers from different regions to portray it. Encircling the central octagon within each are S-shaped devices — uber elemental versions meant to represent ‘cloudbands,’ symbolic of the serpentine dragon from Far Eastern lore enshrouded in vapor. The interstitial spaces are home to sunburst rosettes, solar disks, triangular amulets, and stencil-like blossoms aligned with the vertical edges of the field. The rich color is an exquisite cocktail of ember reds, cadet blue, vivid coral, spruce greens, and maize. Totally unconventional, the border pattern is a novel cruciform device bracketed by what could be called Kufic motifs. It would be visually striking on the wall, holding its own allure among other framed fine art.
