SERAPI
9' 3" x 10' 3" (282 x 312cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This consummately crafted antique Serapi is a highly inventive example of one of the most inspired 19th-century village weaving tradition with its spacious, complex design and varied palette of nuanced, exclusively natural dyed colors. Its large scale elemental character evokes a powerful yet understated dynamism. An iconic diamond medallion stands at the intersection of within an expansive, stepped-edge field, holding four stylized palmettes amidst a variety of geometric botanical motifs. Extremely understated pendants extend into the ample reserve, adorned only by rhythmic abrash striation that adds a profound sense of movement and depth to the composition. Generous, subtly abrashed (intentionally color striated) cornerpieces of a subtle celadon hue frame the field, adding their own uniquely fascinating motifs. A carefully detailed main border offers an unusual-for-Serapi design with intricate, clearly rendered flora in alternating colors on a soft khaki ground.
