KUBA
3' 10" x 5' 7" (117 x 170cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Originating in the lowland area of the Caucasus Mountains near the Caspian Sea that harbored a wealth of weaving styles, this slender rug from Kuba offers a captivating visual arrangement that blends a mastery of natural dye techniques and a singular array of softly geometric graphics. Attractively esoteric architectural, floral, and figural shapes align along the center of the field. Sparkling from compartments made from honeycomb lattice, a litany of exquisite tribal designs can be found from S-glyphs (cloudbands), chessboards, 8-pointed ‘Stars of Wisdom’ tasseled amulets, partially formed birds, and eccentric polygon clusters — their ivory pointillist outlines make them appear to be imbued with electric energy. An exotic palette of mid-tone hues lends a certain warmth to this 150-year-old piece with its luminous blues, golden yellows, and a range of precious green hues on a rarely seen coffee brown ground. This fun-filled piece seems to prefigure the advent of striking avant-garde modern art nearly a half century before it came into vogue.
