MOGHAN
4' 2" x 9' 2" (127 x 279cm) 3rd Qtr., 19th C.
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") A rare find for ardent Caucasian collectors, this celebrative piece was woven by pastoral tribespeople of the fertile Moghan plain, where transitory settlements dating to 5,000 BCE have been discovered. Two columns of carefully placed medallions that are modified 'Memling guls’ (gul meaning ‘flower’ in the Persian language) after a 15th-century Flemish painting showing a similar Oriental rug, occupy almost every inch of the field, abounding with graphic energy. Its range of mature and restrained mid-tone hues imbues this piece with an overall harmony through diversity in darkened cinnabar, azure, maize, pale ruby, dusky emerald, and Caspian blue. Sophisticated abrash tonal shifts throughout convey a sense of the sky, giving the rug an enticing sense of depth and revitalizing the ancient patterns. Freeform spontaneity in the surrounding border bands aptly juxtaposes the more orderly draftsmanship of the central space, creating a most delightful dichotomy in this eloquent must-have woven gem.
