SEICHUR KUBA
3' 7" x 4' 6" (109 x 137cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Presented in an equanimous display, this rug is an original and quintessential example of Kuba artistry and is among the most striking and iconic formats in the Caucasian pantheon of imagery. It offers maximum graphic impact through the confident placement of the ember red notched diamond motifs (transmogrified flowerheads), cruciform split palmettes, and bright ivory “snowflake” blossoms. The deep ocean-blue reserve houses levitating mythological avian guardians perched upon floating diamonds and pinwheel florets. The overall clarity of every chiseled motif and rich harmonious colors benefitted from placement by a savvy and dextrous composer. Understated abrash color striation is explored through finely measured texturing, adding an aliveness that does not distract from the artist's aesthetic goal. An exceptionally eye-pleasing "Dragon" border augments the enigmatic atmosphere of this particularly desirable century-and-a-half-old art piece in extremely good condition.
