MELAS
4' 3" x 5' 9" (130 x 175cm) Circa 1850
(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Woven in a municipality that has existed since ancient times, near the Aegean coast in southwestern Anatolia, this extraordinarily rare and luminous Melas rug showcases the best of the intricate designs and alluring exotic colors that weavings from this region are renowned for. Surrounding a central band of interlocking reciprocal crenellations with diagonal comb-like features and intriguing emblems, rectangular frames with similar patterns ripple successively outward. We often find that borders are often where some of the most imaginative motifs can be found, and this rarely found example, one could say, is a rug made entirely of mesmerizing borders! Naturally derived hues of ancient splendor are revealed in lavish Tyrian purple (even employed in the outer guard border), soft vermilion, luminous azure, ecru, and cardinal red. The colors are still extraordinarily vibrant, and cleverly improvised outlining and color changes infuse this piece with a dynamic energy that dazzles the eye.
