SERAPI
7' 9" x 11' 4" (236 x 345cm) 3rd Qtr., 19th C.
(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Room-size 19th-century Serapis displays a broad range of styles while still holding on to deep-seated traditions, handed down since time immemorial. This thrilling representative features the avant-garde work that was sometimes accomplished in Serapis woven near the mid-19th century. Overscale flowerheads that are almost psychedelic in artistry ascend, dangle, and sway suspended by Aegean green cactus-like tendrils that dexterously spread across every conceivable space in eye-pleasing patterns. Many of these blossoms combine other identifiable forms like fruits, crowned figures, feathers, and luminous jewels. Some resemble the essence of birds that have been totally transmogrified. This landmark carpet retains fabulous condition, leaning toward a softer palette favored in prior times rather than the darker jewel tones that would become the trend. A profusion of delicately abrashed celadon and powder blues set off expanses of sun-washed terra cotta — an inimitable color combination that is accentuated skillfully by the antique ivory field.
