KARAJA
5' 0" x 7' 6" (152 x 229cm) Circa 1900
(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Festive and inviting, this vivifying Karaja carpet displays the splendid classical design these Northwest village weavers are known for, albeit with a welcome imaginative twist. Replacing the most often seen central medallion traditionally used in Karaja rugs is an exuberant oversized sunburst mandala about to take flight. Above and below are the cruciform motifs emblematic of Karaja in an expressively beautiful range of soft jade greens. Nearby in the rich vermilion field, enigmatic tertiary designs sparkle with a kinetic energy, adding to the sense of joy and aliveness in this piece. The dynamic pattern in the field is wonderfully counterbalanced by the relative delicacy and playful quality of this unique interpretation of a classic Shah Abbas design in the golden border. The tremendous appeal of this rug is further enhanced by its superb condition at 125 years of age.
