EAGLE KAZAK
4' 0" x 6' 8" (122 x 203cm) Late 19th C.
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The Chelaberd Eagle Kazak is one of the most iconic and revered of all 19th-century tribal rugs and a foundational piece of any connoisseur's prized collection. Nomadic Armenian tribal weavers traditionally wove two-and-a-half and three-and-a-half-medallion arrangements, which accorded with their sense of harmony and the importance of time. Yet, occasionally, a weaver would be inspired to create the single and double "Sunburst Rug" variations, expressing her own sense of balance in that moment and making them very highly collectible and much sought after today. Long thought to represent a double eagle because these signature medallions emulate the heraldic shield patterns of ancient Europeans, scholars now believe this medallion motif emerged from ancient tribal Armenians' worldview and expresses two planes of reality, one on the earthly plane as exuberant floral medallions and the other on a heavenly cosmological order. Here we have a spectacular double 'Sunburst' emblazoning the brilliant vermillion field. The passage of considerable time has made the colors even richer and more luminous. Delightful hues of solar yellow, Egyptian blue, royal blue, aqua, and vermillion treat the eye. It is exciting to find such a historically significant and highly unique Eagle Kazak at all, much less in superb condition.
