HALVAI BIJAR TREE OF LIFE
4' 6" x 6' 7" (137 x 201cm) 3rd Qtr., 19th C.
(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") One of the most beloved and mythically significant Persian patterns is the 'Tree of Life', symbolizing the profound interconnectedness of all life on the Earth. In this consummately crafted masterwork woven more than 150 years ago, a visually entrancing and grand-scale Tree of Life emanates from the deep indigo blue ground with breathtaking clarity and encompasses the entire field. Weavers of this early period enjoyed tremendous freedom to create their own unique renditions of traditional patterns, such as shifting the upper third to two towering golden cypress trees, symbols of eternity and rebirth, and then returning to the original tree design with a chalice variation, thereby weaving her own story. Every flower and leaf on the branches is drawn slightly differently, conveying a naturalness that is endlessly appealing. The gourmet color palette offers enticing hues of lapis blue, emerald green, jade green, golden ochre, rose quartz, and touches of vermillion red. An enchanting trefoil design in high-contrast blackened brown and aged ivory, in an eye-catching figure-ground reversal, forms a grand frame for this bountiful and energetic composition. its heavy pile condition at such a substantial age, combined with its powerful iconic design, strongly underscores its art investment potential.
