QASHQAI
4' 11" x 6' 0" (150 x 183cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") 19th-century weavings from the South Persian Qashqai confederation often seem to weave a spell of their own upon the entranced viewer, and this handsome piece is no exception. A trio of connected hexagonal medallions in ivory and vermilion is adorned with the instantly recognizable Qashqai “trademark” emblems that undoubtedly signify this rug’s origins. The surrounding indigo reserve holds a cosmological tapestry of ancestral motifs where peacocks of legend (notice their tiny avian “riders") are joined by ethereal encapsulated flowers, disembodied blossoms, latch-hooked “trees,” and wild fowl. Angular corner spandrels are also animated with a unique melange of floral and faunal characters centred around luminous cypresses. In fantastic condition for its century-and-a-half of age, this unique tribal rug would be equally at home as art for the floor or as a distinctive and intriguing hanging for the wall.
