KARAGASHLI KUBA
3' 2" x 5' 0" (97 x 152cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery")
The diminutive, deep lapis-blue field beckons you to revel in the sense of dimensional depth created by its broad, powerful borders. The dramatic, high-contrast square medallions and accompanying snowflake blossoms form the central axis and are a favorite of the Karagashli design repertoire.
The captivating color palette contrasts vivid vermillion red with deep lapis-blue and is further energized by shades of saffron yellow, jade green, and cobalt blue. The abrash used throughout the composition, and very magnificently in the lapis field, reflects the weaver's deeper understanding of beauty, which can inspire the modern connoisseur of color. The striking golden main border features a meandering vine and palmette design, rendered in a charming, elemental style using pure geometry. Along with flanking high-contrast minor borders, they create a striking frame. The even patina, gained over 150 years, enhances the clarity of this tribal folk art masterpiece and creates a mosaic-like textural effect, very appealing to the rug enthusiast's eye.
