(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The Shishboluki were a nomadic sub-tribe of the greater Qashqai Confederacy in southwest Persia, and their rugs are highly prized for their extraordinarily fine weaving, stunningly etched, visually engaging designs, and Tiffany-level colors. Here, the field is bountifully filled with diagonal arrangements of elaborate jewel-toned botehs, the Seed of Life in the form known as the paisley, which had been a favorite in Persian court weavings for countless centuries and, by the time of this rug, 175 years ago, had also become popular in Europe. This Qashqai weaver took this formal design and, while maintaining utter refinement, has added not only subtle stylizations but also a truly fantastical population of essential and meaningful tribal and animal motifs filling all the open spaces in an enchanting cascade of sizes. The menagerie includes horses, sheep, figure-S dragons, and the very prominently sized and much-valued murghi, i.e., chickens. These numerous ornaments, along with amuletic diamonds and tiny rosettes, are drawn with geometric precision and are scattered asymmetrically and with spontaneous abandon. Gazing into this fabulously colored and truly transporting Qashqai tribal rug, it is a marvel to imagine how the master weaver could keep this whole, incredible, complex, multilayered design in her mind as she deftly created it in colored wool, knot by knot and line by line over many months. As a significant work of tribal folk art, filled with surprises, variations, and a depth of artistry to attract the seasoned eye for a lifetime, this very well-preserved piece is an essential addition to an important art rug collection as well as a deeply transformative design element for a cherished setting.
